SLI will be the beneficiary of the feel good story of the year in brain injuries & baseball. Adam Greenberg worked his way through the minors to step to the plate for the Chicago Cubs on July 9, 2005. On the first pitch he was hit in the head by a 92 mile per hour fastball & suffered a brain injury, never playing again that season. He heroically battled back from post-concussion syndrome to continue playing in the minors, but was never able to reach the majors again. Matt Liston launched the One at Bat campaign to give Adam the chance for the major league plate appearance he earned.
Yesterday the Miami Marlins announced they will give Adam that chance on Tuesday, October 2, against the New York Mets. Adam’s one day salary will be donated to the Marlins Foundation, who will then donate it to Adam’s charity of the choice: the Sports Legacy Institute. Congratulations to Adam for his perseverance, & for proving that a brain injury is not the end of the world. Chris Nowinski will attend the game on behalf of SLI to cheer Adam on, & we encourage you to join us.
From the Connecticut area? The Bridgeport Bluefish invite you to a viewing party at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard to watch Adam, a former Bluefish, on the big screen. Doors open at 6:00 PM with a required $5 donation. Net proceeds to benefit SLI.
